What is hosting and do I need it?
In it simplest form…. to have a website you need a domain name (e.g. myshop.com) , content (text, picture, videos, music, news, etc.) and someone to host it.
If you want, or already have, a website then you need hosting. A hosting provider (like us) will allocate a bit of space for your website and domain name on our server and we charge a monthly fee for this. What is the average hosting cost?
Hosting charges vary and are generally based on a number of factors:
- The size of your website (combined size of files, text, pictures, movies, etc.)
- Whether you want email facilities (like email addresses me@mydomain.co.uk)
- The level of support you will need
- The amount of traffic your site will/currently use/s.
The charge for hosting varies from £0 per month to £100 and above.
Is all hosting the same?
No! You will find all hosting providers will give you different features, levels of support, amount of web space and so.
More importantly there can be a huge difference in the quality of hosting you have been provided.
Some hosting providers, do great deals on free hosting, but be aware you will be sharing the service with hundreds if not thousands of other sites and if one site is draining all the resources it can affect your site in both its uptime (the amount of time your site is available to view) and also the speed at which it is delivered.
